How to Reset Local Security Policy Settings to Default in Windows XP and Vista

Even if you remove the computer from the domain and put it into a workgroup, the local security policies that were changed will not be removed. This can be very annoying because local security policies include settings like preventing users from installing printers, restricting who can use the CD-ROM drive, requiring a smart card, restricted logon hours, password requirements and more!

These are all great in a corporate environment, but will cause all kinds of grief to a normal computer user. So what you can do to solve this problem is to reset the local security settings to their default settings.

The way this can be done is by using the default security configuration templates that come with all versions of Windows XP and Vista. This may sound too technical, but all you have to do is run one command.

First, click on Start, Run and then type in CMD. Now copy and paste the following command into the window:

secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose

If you are running Windows Vista and need to reset the security settings to their default values, use this command instead:

secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose

 WindowsLogo_256x256USB

Imagine a situation where you need to install Windows Vista or 7 in a system but you don’t have access to DVD drive. We all know Windows Vista, Server 2008 or 7 comes in DVDs and you’ll need a DVD drive to install them. Then how will you install them? The solution is, you can create a bootable USB drive which can be used to install Windows without using DVD drive.

Requirements:

    * A USB Drive (4 GB or more)
    * Windows Vista, Server 2008 or 7 ISO image or DVD
    * Host OS: Windows Vista (SP1 or SP2), Server 2008 or 7

How to use:

Once you meet the requirements, run the utility. Its a portable utility so doesn’t need installation. Simply run it and check the option “I have read and accepted the following License Agreement”. Now click on OK button and it’ll launch the main application.

It also shows a Help window so that you can use the utility easily. The utility requires only 4 easy steps to follow:

    * Check USB drive (To check whether your USB drive is attached or not)
    * Format USB drive
    * Choose DVD or ISO image (To copy the required files to USB drive)
    * Start the process to create bootable USB drive

BOOTMGR is compressed. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

Boot Manager is compressed
If by accident having compressed the entire boot partition, then Vista will display the following error:

BOOTMGR is compressed. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

Check points for fixing compressed boot-manager:

* Boot into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and perform a “Startup Repair”.

* If the above doesn’t solve the problem then boot into WinRE again, but when selecting the Vista-installation, then       press “Load Drivers” (Instead of “Next”) and use the mini Windows Explorer to right-click the boot-drive and deselect       “Compress this Drive” and choose Apply to sub-folders and files.

* If that also fails then boot into WinRE again, and go to the “Command Prompt” and execute these commands:
o compact /U C:\bootmgr
o compact /U C:\ntldr

if you cannot find the compact command go to x:\windows\system32\ and execute the command.
